Very large numbers can be written in standard form

One billion | 1,000,000,000 | 10^{9} |

Ten billion | 10,000,000,000 | 10^{10} |

Notice − in each of the above examples the value in the power e.g. the 3 in 10^{3} matches the number of zeroes 1,000 in the number column

400,000 = 4.0 × 10^{5}
