Terms are numbers, letters and brackets that are mulitplied together, for example

| 5a2 | = 5 × a × a | |
| 6(d + 5) | = 6 × d + 6 × 5 | |
| = 6d + 30 |
Are a string of terms that are separated by either plus + or minus −
| 10xy + 3x − 4y2 + 5 | |
| 10xy | Is the xy term. |
| + 3x | Is the x term |
| − 4y2 | Is the y2 term |
| + 5 | Is the number term |
| 4a2 + 6a − 6ab + 7 | |
| 4a2 | Is the a2 term |
| + 6a | Is the a term |
| − 6ab | Is the ab term |
| + 7 | Is the number term |
Note: there is no + sign in front of the first term
