Quadratic Expansion − Split Method
(x − 10)(x + 2) can be multiplied out to a quadratic expansion using the split method
Split Method − spilt what is in the first bracket and multiply those terms with each term in the second bracket
Example 1. Expand (x − 10)(x + 2)
Example 2. Expand (2x − 10)(3x + 2)
(x − 10)(x + 2)
= x(x + 2) − 10(x + 2) |
= x2 + 2x − 10x − 20 |
= x2 − 8x − 20 |
(2x − 10)(3x + 2)
= 2x(3x + 2) − 10(3x + 2) |
= 6x2 + 4x − 30x − 20 |
= 6x2 − 26x − 20 |
Note: 'Expand', 'Multiply out' and 'Remove the brackets' is the same thing
