This means expand the brackets and then simplify by putting like terms together
Example 1. Expand and simplify 3x(2y + 7x) − y(5x + 2y)
Example 2. Expand and simplify 4x(3y + 2x) − y(5x − 5y)
(a) Expand by multiplying out the brackets

(b) Simplify by putting like terms together
| 6xy + 21x2 − 5xy − 2y2 | ||
| = 21x2 + 6xy − 5xy − 2y2 | ||
| = 21x2 + xy − 2y2 |
